A reluctant start deserves a proper check.

Flat batteries, winter starting problems and what to tell a recovery operator before arranging a jump start.

Describe the symptom, not just the diagnosis

A slow start, repeated clicking or a car that does nothing when you turn the key are useful observations. Tell the operator what you can see and hear, and whether anything has changed since the last successful journey. A starting problem is not automatically a failed battery.

Why colder weather can reveal a problem

Low temperatures affect a 12-volt battery’s performance. Slow cranking or clicking can be a sign of a battery problem, but starter and charging-system faults are also possible. The AA describes a jump start as a temporary measure and recommends testing the battery and electrical system afterwards. See its winter breakdown guidance.

A jump start is an assessment, not a guarantee

Give us the make, model and year, and mention whether it is a hybrid or electric vehicle. Starting assistance has to suit the vehicle. It does not mean charging an electric vehicle’s traction battery. If assistance at the collection point is unsuitable, recovery to a garage may be the better next step.

Successfully starting once does not prove that the underlying fault has gone away. Ask about the next check or repair rather than assuming that a short journey will solve it. Follow your vehicle handbook and garage advice for charging and maintenance.

What our jump-start visit includes

We use high-output portable super booster packs and check the battery and charging system. We investigate the likely cause of the starting problem and discuss whether battery replacement or further checks may be needed. The booster packs can be carried to vehicles in multi-storey car parks where a recovery truck cannot reach the parking level. Tell us the level, bay and any entry instructions when arranging assistance.

Make the collection point easy to identify

For a car park, share its name, level, row or zone, nearby signs and access restrictions. Say if a barrier needs opening or if the keys are with somebody else. At home, mention if the car is in a garage or blocked behind another vehicle.

Before a longer period parked up

If you have already noticed reluctant starting, arrange a check before leaving the car unused for a trip. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for accessories and battery care. There is no single battery lifespan, charging routine or jump-start procedure that suits every vehicle.

Check linked official guidance for current rules. Recovery arrangements depend on the individual vehicle and location.
