Shopping finished, but the car will not start

With bags to load and everyone ready to go home, an unexpected starting problem can be frustrating. You do not need to know exactly what has failed before calling. Tell us what happens when you turn the key or press the start button, and whether the vehicle was starting normally before your visit.

Simple things to check first

Notice whether the dashboard lights come on and whether you hear clicking or the engine turning. Turn off unnecessary electrical accessories and check for a key warning. These observations can help explain the problem; they do not prove the battery is at fault. Avoid repeated starting attempts or attempting unfamiliar work under the bonnet.

Check the nearest parking signs for the car-park name, level, row or zone. Give the closest entrance or landmark as well as the registration, make and model. Tell us if the car is under a height barrier, beside pillars or blocked by another vehicle. If you are unsure about access for outside assistance, ask the parking or security team for the relevant instructions.
